Unofficial Preseason Power Rankings
- Bethany/St. James – Now that St. John’s Evangel has won their third title and has moved on, BSJ is considered the top ranking team. Although SMSJ went to the finals last year, BSJ also lost the same team that has held the “Three Peat” title. BSJ has won the Championship in previous years before the tight hold of SJEC. This year looks like it will be no different. Seeing this team winning during the preseason scrimmages against opponents like SMSJ with a roster of familiar faces that holds this team together as the powerhouse of the past. The new major change seems to be at the pitchers mound with Jimmy who was able to throw a spin type of a pitch that had batters popping out.
- St. Mary’s /St. John’s – We have seen this dominant team with an unbelievable powerful line up fall short year after year. After coming off an undefeated regular season, some how this team finds a way to lose it in the finals. The roster of players looks the same but watching this team play, they have glimpses of a top-notch team but errors and lackluster innings create losses. They in my opinion would only edge out the next two teams in the second place spot.
- St. Thomas Mar Thoma – This team has struggled in years past but they finally seems to have put together a roster of players that can compete and even squeeze out a win against the other top teams. This will be my team to watch. Levan seems to play much smarter (with age comes wisdom) and covers a lot of ground in centerfield. As always, he is a daredevil out in the field as well as bat. This year, he seems as if he has taken control of the team and each position seems a bit stronger. Looking forward to seeing them excel.
- St. Thomas Youth League (STYL) – Last year this new comer beat out some of the veteran teams to make it into the Playoffs. This year they have added a couple of new faces and improved on some of their key positions. This will be another team that I am excited to watch as they look to take on the powerhouses. They have some strong players that seem to carry the team to some victories. My favorite player on this team is the young superstar named Justin who is also joined by his two sisters and father. An all-star family! Justin has the making of being MVP of this league and has a strong understanding of how this game should be played. I would not be surprised if this team makes it all the way to the finals.
- KNA – This year the KNA team has merged with Catholics to add a couple of players so they can finally have a full team each Sunday. Watching this team, you can see that they still need some work but with the leadership of James and the re-emergence of the new father of twins, aka old man Jayan, should set this team on a course to be a worthy opponent. The key quality players of the past along with Johncy and George should make for a good team. Although I have them ranked at 5 I believe as the season progresses, this team will get better and better each week.
- STOC – After being beat in the past, this team that never gives up and will fight to the end has added a few new players. An improved player that most everyone knows has finally come out to his own. The big bearded Blessen has emerged as the Most Improved Player. Okay we can see that he has been working out during off-season but that’s not the only thing that is impressive. He now is hitting like Big Papi Ortiz and his fielding has improved big time. Although I have this team on the bottom of the ranking, I don’t expect them to be #6 during the playoffs. The new young player they added is a huge improvement to some of their past players even if he doesn’t know how to play the game. His big hits make up for his shortcomings. If Mano can continue to recruit guys like this and teach them the fundamentals, I think this team could easily be another powerhouse of a team. Hopefully they will not fall back to their old ways and rather they will continue to improve. Like Waldo, we are still searching for Big Bear Naveen to rejoin this team.
